Google phone in the horizon?

There has been a lot of activity over the last couple of days about a possible Google Phone. It all started on Dec 11, when a few employees tweeted about the phones that Google handed out to them.

One Google Program manager tweeted

Stuck in mass of traffic leaving work post last all hands of 2009. ZOMG we had fireworks and we all got the new Google phone. It’s beautiful

While another said

At Google, we are constantly experimenting with new products and technologies, and often ask employees to test these products for quick feedback and suggestions for improvements in a process we call dogfooding (from “eating your own dogfood”). Well this holiday season, we are taking dogfooding to a new level.
We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.

Unfortunately, because dogfooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details. We hope to share more after our dogfood diet.

This new Google phone aka Nexus One is by HTC and is expected to be out by January. It is rumored that Google is going to sell this phone directly and it will be an unlocked GSM phone.  That would put T-Mobile and AT&T in the radar for now.

It is supposedly very fast. It runs on a Snapdragon chip, has a super high-resolution OLED touchscreen, is thinner than the iPhone, has no keyboard, and two mics. The mic on the back of the phone helps eliminate background noise.  It also has the  voice-to-text feature and that would open up a lot of doors.

If t his news is true, now, wouldn’t that put the companies that have embraced the Android OS at a risk?  Wouldn’t Google would stand to gain so much more by just focusing on the software. After all, they have been the only company to keep Apple on their toes.

Is this really a Google phone or is this testing of Android 2.1 by Google employees? Let’s wait and see what January 2010 brings. Whatever it is, it is going to be interesting.
