Locale Android App review
Price : Free
Version : 0.695 beta
Update: Please note that the beta version of this app has been discontinued. The current market price for this app is $9.99
My work-place is a ring free zone. Cell phones have to be on vibrate. I have been guilty of spoiling the tranquility by making my cell go off in high volume and making people beside me jump in fright. It comes with an after effect of having to deal with some degree of dissent, disturbance and guilt. Well, not anymore. Locale a free Android app takes care of these mundane yet necessary tasks for me.
What :
Locale lets you set situations and configure conditions for these situations. If the conditions for a situation is met, then the settings that have been specified for that situation takes effect. If no condition is met, and a default situation is configured, then the default situation becomes enabled and the settings for the default situation is met.
How:
Now, this is how I have configured my Locale.
I have 3 situations configured. Home Day, Home Night and Work. All of these work off of a GPS location. My Home Day has the Location and the time conditions(7:00AM to 9:00PM) set. My ringer volume is set to a high volume. My Home Night situation on the other hand has the GPS location set and the time is from (9:01PM to 6:59AM) and it has the display set to a very light intensity and the ringer volume is very low and the notification is off.
My work has the GPS location set and the ringer is set to vibrate for both the calls and notifications. Though I don’t, it is a good idea to always have a default situation, so that you can control exactly how you loud want your phone volume, display, notification, network, ringtone and even your wallpaper to be. The below screenshot shows the conditions that you can set for a situation.
Here are the conditions that you can set for a setting.
You need to have Locale running at the background all the time. If you use Advanced Task killer, remember to uncheck this application when you kill the other tasks. There are plugins that are available for this application. More about that in another post.

Locale rocks. .I learn a lot from this site…awresome
Thanks ruckus. Your positive comments keep us going.
Locale is no longer free.
Too bad the Locale dev’s got greedy and thuggish. Recently they took the steps of abandoning the free beta version, removing it from the Android Marketplace, and initiating a forced upgrade of all beta users. If you disregard the upgrade message you are unceremoniously exited from the app without a way to turn off the rules currently in place.
I was unfortunate enough to be stuck in a rule that had my data connection turned off when this happened. My phone was held hostage. The devs were unhelpful and unapologetic. My only recourse was a factory reset on the phone. Uncool. Thank you two forty four a.m.!
Thanks for the update, Eug. I still have the beta version and I see what you mean. I am sure you must have tried it, but did you try uninstalling the app? That is kind of sad, this was a really useful app. Nothing is more frustrating than having to do a factory reset – Sorry about that.
I believe you have made many truly interesting points. Not too many people would really think about it the direction you just did. I am truly impressed that there is so much about this subject that has been uncovered and you did it so nicely
