Need a remote control for your computer? Your first choice is the Gmote Android app. It allows you to start and control music and video on your computer using the app as a remote.
We wanted to say using the app on your Android phone, then realized that there could be more gadgets than just an Android phone where this could be used like the Archos or a rooted Nook. So the term using the app in this post refers to using it in whichever gadget this app is installed in.
What
Here is a list of what you can do with Gmote.
1. Start and control music on your computer using the Gmote app.
2. It has a built-in file browser. You can browse your entire file system and select the media files you want to play. Optionally you can also specify folders that you want to be able to browse. This lets you set your media folders if you need access to it easily.
3. Gmote can also be used as a wireless Touchpad and Keyboard, allowing you to control your computer at distance.
4. Stream music from your computer to your phone.
How
Make sure the phone and the computer are on the same Wireless Network.
The installation is a 2 step process.
1. Install the app on your app. Install the server on your computer from the Gmote website. When you install it, it asks you to set a password. You have to use this password to connect to your computer from the app. Specify the media file folders on the server. It automatically adds your C drive and any DVD/CD drives it detects.
2. Start the app and connect to your computer.
Here is what you can do with this app.
1. You can control media. It comes with the standard play, pause, stop, fast forward and rewind buttons along with volume control. You can choose to play this either on your computer or on your phone. Being in the wi-fi network, but not necessarily in the same room as the computer and being able to play music, video, pictures on the phone will cut it for me.
2. Browse the file system for media files.
3. TouchPad . Use the gadget as a mouse. If you watch movies on your computer this might be a good thing, but I can’t see myself using this feature.
4. Navigate and search for content on the web using the app on your gadget and then open it on your computer. I can’t see myself using much of this either.
There are a few quirks and it is not a smooth sail, but for what it is worth, it is a good utility app.
Usefulness : If you stream music using your computer, then this is a very useful app.
